普通在山林中分布广泛，都江堰低山区较易遇见。它们的嘴像个尖凿子，和啄木鸟类似。捕虫时往往从树的下部开始，盘旋上行，边走边检查树干上的缝隙和皮下，发现虫卵和虫蛹便会迅速啄食，有时还会从上往下倒着检查一遍。如果说啄木鸟干的是“外科”，普通干的就是“皮肤科”，一样称得上是“森林医生”。普通是很勇敢的鸟儿，无论取食和育雏都不怕人，对进入巢区的同种或别种小鸟，哪怕是啄木鸟，都会毫不客气地进行驱赶。如果有人敲击其筑巢的树干，它们就会“呼、呼、呼”地向人示威，所以又被称为“蓝大胆”。它们常利用啄木鸟废弃的巢洞做窝，雌雄鸟会精心装饰洞口和洞内，用泥抹平巢的内壁，还会用泥将洞口抹成直径约2.6厘米的圆形小孔，是鸟类中少见的“泥水匠”。
