攀禽包括鸟纲中的鹦形目、鹃形目、雨燕目、咬鹃目、夜鹰目、佛法僧目、戴胜目、鴷形目和犀鸟目的鸟类。它们的脚趾多为两个向前，两个向后（对趾型），有利于攀缘树木。攀禽因食性不同，分别活动于有树木的平原、山地 、丘陵或者悬崖、水域附近，其喙也呈现出极大的多样性。常见攀禽包括夜鹰、鹦鹉、杜鹃、雨燕、翠鸟、啄木鸟等。绝大多数攀禽为留鸟，少数物种为候鸟。

此科鸟类均为中小型树栖鸟。它们的脚短弱，两趾向前两趾向后，为对趾型。它们主要以昆虫为食，特别爱吃多数鸟儿不敢吃的松毛虫、松针枯叶蛾和舞毒蛾的幼虫，是森林的卫士。它们一般在树顶浓荫里栖息，对人很警惕。其鸣声又大又响，往往彻夜不停，自古就有“望帝啼鹃”“杜鹃啼血”的故事和传说。
大多数杜鹃科鸟类既不做窝也不孵蛋，但“托儿”有高招：借巢育雏。它们会瞅准空子，在寄生鸟亲鸟离巢的短短几分钟里，产下和寄生鸟蛋色彩无异的蛋。杜鹃蛋的孵化期较短，小杜鹃一出壳，连眼都未睁就会将巢内其他蛋和幼雏推到巢边，驮到背上抛出巢去，独享养父母的抚育；而小杜鹃长大后，却会抛下养父母远走高飞。这一切都是杜鹃的本能，不能按人类的道德标准给它们扣上“骗子”“凶手”“忘恩负义”“黑心肠”的各种罪名。值得思考的是：杜鹃借巢育雏的本能是怎样产生和形成的？
