体长：约35厘米；体重：200～300克
主要以昆虫为食，也捕食小型哺乳动物和鸟类。它们善于突然袭击，从高空折起双翅直扑猎物，用嘴打击猎物后脑，在对方受伤、丧失逃生能力时，再高速冲过去抓走猎物，这个过程是一套高精度的攻击和特技飞行表演。它们每窝产2～3枚蛋，从孵化到幼鸟习飞，亲鸟要辛苦忙碌2个月。
Falco tinnunculus feeds on insects,mammals and birds of small size.While hovering in the air,they always attack preys’ hindbrain straightly and suddenly with wings folded.The entire hunting is like an extreme stunt show.

鸱鸮科Strigidae
在我国有30余种，被统称为“猫头鹰”，均为国家二级保护动物。它们是“捕鼠专业户”：头可左右各转动180°，观察范围极广；眼无环状肌，不能收缩转动，视网膜无圆锥细胞，只有圆柱细胞，所以白天睁一只眼闭一只眼，夜里却可以明察秋毫，看清老鼠的活动；有一对长耳孔，且高低不同，能通过声音准确判断老鼠活动的位置；周身的羽毛又轻又软，飞行时毫无声息，老鼠往往是刚发现“敌情”，就已落入它们的利爪和勾嘴之下。它们会把杀死的老鼠囫囵吞下，等消化完以后才将不能利用的毛、骨从嘴里吐出，所以在其栖息地周围往往有一些褐色的“食团”，那就是老鼠被食后的残渣。猫头鹰在繁殖时才成对活动，树洞、墙洞、岩穴都可以垫一点干草做窝。雌鸟负责抱孵，雄鸟负责警戒。由于人们的不了解，再加上猫头鹰的奇特的模样、夜行习性以及令人感到凄切的夜间鸣叫，过去常被人将它和灾难联系在一起。
There are merely about 30 species of birds falling into Strigidae family,which are all named as the second-class national protected animals.Excellent night eyesight,long ear openings of different height,sharply hooked beak and curved talon,soft and light feathers,all contribute to their fame of experts at rats catching with no failure.They come and go in pairs only when reproducing.Tree hole,wall hole and cave are all desirable nest site.
