世界文化史浩如烟海；然大别之，不外综合的与分科的二类。综合的文化史，固不乏佳著；惟既须贯通各民族，又须综合各科目；非失诸芜杂，则稍嫌简略。其编纂之困难，视一国或一民族之文化史尤甚。至分科的文化史，规模巨而体例佳者，就著者所知，当推法国出版之“人类演进史丛书”（L' Evolution De L' Humanite），主编者为Henri Barr氏。全书五十余巨册，每册述一专题。自一九二〇年开始刊行。越五年，英国继起而有同样之编辑计划。其体例与法国之“人类演进史丛书”无二致，而规模益大，定名为“文化史丛书”（History of Civilization），主编者为剑桥大学之C.K.Ogden氏，而以美国之Harry Elmer Barnes教授为编辑顾问；俾于英美两国同时发行。全书拟编为二百余种，迄今已出版者九十八种，每种一巨册。其中译自法文之“人类演进史丛书”者四十二种；余皆自行编著。已出版各书别为十五类，列举于下，其非译自法文者别加星符为记。

以上系据原出版者之分类，兹为便利比较计，别按第四项之分类；其结果除一般文化史占七种，分国文化史占二十一种外，所余七十种皆属分科文化史。计哲学占一种，宗教十二种，政治七种，经济五种，法律二种，教育二种，社会十一种，语文一种，科学二种，医学一种，艺术四种，文学一种，地理二种，民族十七种。除分国史因本丛书为世界文化史，不得不特别编著外，其间一般文化史种数与分科文化史比较，适为一与十之差别。足见文化史欲谋编纂之便利与完善，有不得不倾向于分科编纂者矣。
