本书以相互性概念为核心，在对比和分析各种正义感理论的基础上构建一种基于相互性的正义感理论，并且澄清其概念，证明其合理性。本书指出基于相互性的正义感理论贴合了人最根本的生存处境，也反映了个体与共同体在命运上的特殊关联。基于相互性的正义感理论应用于大学生的思想政治教育既具有必要性，也具有可能性。需要针对大学生成长中所面临的特殊问题，来构建培育大学生正义感的科学机制。
正义感涉及的是主体的心理状态的研究，有一种观点认为，必须用到实证调查的研究方法，否则无法得出有价值的或令人信服的结论。这种观点认为对待和测定人的心理等问题必须运用实证调查的研究方法，尤其是实验心理学的方法，因此本论题的研究也应该运用实证的方法。笔者认为采用何种研究方法应该根据研究对象的特点和状况来确定。在大多数人对正义感还比较模糊的情况下，实证研究方法未必是一个最好的选择。本书的目的是先澄清和分析概念，以之为基础建立一定的理论，具体的实证研究是下一阶段的任务。现阶段，本书吸收社会学、道德心理学、伦理学、教育学等多学科的方法以文献的分析、解释作为主要的展开论述的方式。在必要时，本书也会采用一些著名的实验或实证研究的成果。
