违禁物品首要的就是违法的物品，比如毒品和酒精（在埃默里大学，满21岁的学生才可以在宿舍放酒，这点可能各个学校规定不一样）。
学校为了保证学生的安全和健康，除了禁止违法物品，还会比法律更加严格一些，如禁止摆放枪支、刀具等武器（其实菜刀也是违禁的），香烟也不被允许。为了保证宿舍楼的运作平稳，大功率的电子产品和带电热丝的产品，比如电饭煲，是被禁止的，防止宿舍跳闸；带火苗的物品也是被禁止的，比如蜡烛、打火机，防止发生火灾。入学之前学校会发一张宿舍违禁物品清单和推荐携带物品清单，大家可以对照自己的需要决定买什么带什么。
