D.H.Law rence（David Herbert Law rence，1885-1930），English author，was born in Eastwood，Nottingham.His father was a coal miner.His mother was a school teacher.After graduating from high school，he once worked as a clerk and school teacher.Later he received the teacher-training courses at University College，Nottingham.Law rence eloped to Italy in 1912 with Frieda，the wife of a Nottingham professor and married her two years later.After their marriage，the Law rence were in constant travel.Their nomadic existence was spent variously in Ceylon，Australia，the United States and Mexico.

Plot：The protagonist of the novel is called Paul.His parents Mr.and Mrs.Morel fall in love with each other at first sight in a dancing party.Soon they get married.But Morel is a miner with a lower level of education，while Mrs.Morel is a relatively well-educated woman from a middle-class family.The passion between the two is soon fallen away because of the hard life and completely different living habits.Fierce conflict broke out between the husband and wife.Mrs.Morel's disappointment，discontent and hatred toward her husband make her transfer her affections and hope from her husband to her children，especially her first son，William.Under the influence of Mrs.Morel，the children show their love to their mother and hate to their father.

William，the first son，is intelligent and active.He is the apple of his mother's eye，winning awards，doing well in school and finding jobs easily and Mrs.Morel is very proud of her son.But unfortunately William catches pneumonia and dies early.William's death is a heavy blow to Mrs.Morel.At the moment，Paul，her second son，is seriously ill which wakes up her from the grief.The mother then turns her love and attention to Paul.

Mrs.Morel falls gravely ill because of a tumor and grows weaker.Knowing that Mrs.Morel is prolonging her death to live for Paul，Paul and Annie fear that she will live longer than she can emotionally survive.They cannot stand to see their beloved mother live in such pain.At the end of the novel，Paul takes a major step in releasing himself from his Oedipus complex.He intentionally overdoses his dying mother with morphine，an act that ends her suffering but also subverts his Oedipal fate.

Comment：This is the most autobiographical of all Law rence's works as the author himself had a similar relationship with his own mother.The use of this oedipal theme is one of a number of Freudian concepts he used throughout his books.It offers practical evidence for the study of modern psychology.
