自由主义与基督教的人道主义痕迹及其在民权发展中的作用

【摘要】:毫无疑问的是,自由主义和基督教中都有明显的人道主义痕迹,而且这种人道主义精神与民权发展的议程并驾齐驱。基督教和自由主义在孕育民权概念中发挥的重要作用毋庸赘述,同样,在自由主义和基督教之间,以及它们内部存在的广泛差异性也毋庸忽视。自由主义者也曾经保护家庭。现代主义者或许认为这个社会发展是人类的进步,但对其他人来说,短暂的自由主义发展历史或许是一种警示,这或许表达了一代人的价值观。

自由主义与基督教的人道主义痕迹及其在民权发展中的作用

本章里面能涉及的内容实在有限,但是这些论述是了解西方宗教的重要内容。毫无疑问的是,自由主义基督教中都有明显的人道主义痕迹,而且这种人道主义精神与民权发展的议程并驾齐驱。毕竟,民权论述在这两个宗教的文化环境中孕育成长,也可以说是它们的直系后代。人道主义在这两个宗教中是或曾经是如此不完备,这个事实的确令人难过。基督教和自由主义在孕育民权概念中发挥的重要作用毋庸赘述,同样,在自由主义和基督教之间,以及它们内部存在的广泛差异性也毋庸忽视。本章谈到的是两个运动历史,它们都以对人道主义道德观念的发展所做的贡献为豪,它们都不能不假思索地在关于民权和人道主义的跨文化争论中宣告其拥有“道德优越感”的地位。

我们还清醒地认识到所谓的“不言而喻”的价值观在文化变革和进一步的反思中常常会引来争议。自由主义者,基督教新教徒和天主教都曾捍卫过奴隶制。自由主义者也曾经保护家庭。正像很多基督教新教徒一样,天主教徒也曾经反对宗教自由。这样的例子不胜枚举。当我们意识到20世界60年代个人主义观念下的自由主义在当时的发展如此短暂时,它给我们的启示就显得格外重要。现代主义者或许认为这个社会发展是人类的进步,但对其他人来说,短暂的自由主义发展历史或许是一种警示,这或许表达了一代人的价值观。
