Re.:International Business English Training
Recently a number of department mangers have told me that some employees’ Business English is so poor that they cannot work effectively.Therefore,I am writing to inform you of this and to present my proposal to solve the problem.
The Problem
Some of the clerks of the sales department are not able to communicate with customers,which results in loss of orders.Besides,some employees in our marketing department,though they have passed Band 6 College English Test,are poor in Business English so that they did not perform well enough in the previous marketing presentations.What’s more,some employees are not only poor at oral Business English but also at business writing.For example,they even don’t know how to write a business report or business proposal.What is worse,some of them write terrible sentences in daily memos or e-mails to our customers.Consequently,they fail in communicating with people,which lead to poor work.
A Solution to Solve the Problem
To solve the problem and to improve work efficiency,it is proposed that those employees should be trained in terms of International Business English.
Methods to Train the Employees
We are going to organize Business English training courses to train those who are poor at Business English.We have three ways to hold the training courses:
(1)To hold in-service training courses:We are going to invite a well-known Business English expert,Professor WENG from Shanghai Pudong Advanced International Business English Training Centre to our company to teach International Business English.The in-service training courses,which are intended to last three months,are divided into two kinds:intermediate level and advanced level.The classes take place twice a week:on Tuesday and Friday from 16:00 to 18:00.There is a limitation to the size of each class.As to the number of the limitation,we will decide on it according to the actual situation.We are to tell the department managers to hand in a name list of the participants.
(2)To require some key personnel who are poor at Business English to attend part- time Business English courses in Shanghai Pudong Advanced International Business English Training Centre.The courses will last for a semester,namely,from September to January 2014.They are requested to take part in BEC Vantage examination.If they pass the exam,we suggest that the company pay the tuition for the courses.If they fail in it,they must pay half of the tuition,the other half being paid by the company.
(3)To encourage all the department managers to improve their Business English.To train them,we suggest that they attend in-company Business English classes at weekend.We can also invite Prof.WENG to teach.If he is not available,some other Business English professors are to be invited to teach.The participants are all requested to take part in the final examination:both written and oral examinations.This kind of training courses will be held periodically.The length of the course is three months.Those who do well in the examination or have passed the BEC examination enjoy the privilege to get promoted in future.In this way,they will have incentive to learn Business English.
Textbooks and Materials
(1)We will choose proper textbooks for participants at different levels.We are going to choose some imported textbooks and also some books published at home.Besides,some useful materials about International Business English will be provided by Professor WENG,which are written by him.
(2)We are considering inviting Professor WENG to write some special materials for the courses,which are related to our company’s business scope.
(3)We intend to ask the Training Department at the London Headquarters to provide some professional materials of Business English.
Cost
The total budget will be about ¥90 000,which is to be used for teachers’pay,the tuition of the participants who will go out to attend training courses and buying course materials.We cannot work out the exact sum of money for each item for the moment.Details about the account will be reported to the Board of the Directors after this proposal is granted.
Conclusion
It is very obvious that it is urgent to improve the employees,Business English.Now that it is not the business season of the year,employees can afford time to improve Business English.I think the training courses,if organized well enough,will be effective.The trainees’Business English can be improved to some extent.

(2)要求部分商务英语的骨干人员到上海浦东高级国际商务英语培训中心参加兼职商务英语课程。课程为期一个学期,即2014年9月至2014年1月,要求参加剑桥商务英语中级考试。如果他们通过考试,我们建议公司支付课程的学费。如果他们不及格,他们必须支付一半的学费,另一半由公司支付。
(3)鼓励各部门经理提高商务英语水平。为了培训他们,我们建议他们在周末参加公司内部的商务英语课程。我们也可以邀请翁教授授课。如果他不在,将邀请其他一些商务英语教授任教。参加者均需参加期末考试:笔试和口试。此类培训课程将定期举办。课程长度为三个月。考试成绩优异或通过BEC考试者,有机会在日后晋升。这样,他们就会有动力去学习商务英语。
教科书和材料
(1)我们会为英语不同水平的学员选择合适的教材。我们将选择一些进口的教科书和一些国内出版的书籍。此外,翁教授将提供一些有关国际商务英语的有用材料,这些材料由他编写。
