Pu Songnian, a passionate entertainer supporting serious causes

1871年,蒲松年出生在四川双流县彭家场一个农民家里。因为家境贫寒,无力供他读书,他便随兄长在各处唱傩戏、拌端公。12岁那年,父母不再让他出去唱傩戏,他便偷跑了出去。因为年龄太小,戏班子不敢收他,蒲松年只能一路向东南而行。

一日他看到了一场名为《拾金》的川剧,他被戏台上那名扮演叫花子的丑角所吸引。散场后,他意犹未尽,在大街上学唱起来。那丑角乃是川剧名丑岳春,此时他正在街边一处茶楼上放松休闲。听着这熟悉的唱腔,分明是有极好的戏曲天赋。岳春爱才之心顿起,便收了他做徒弟。

他虽然拜了师,但还没开始学艺便被家里人抓了回去。等他再度逃出来,师父已经不知去处了。此后几年,他只身去往云南昭通,在那里的茶馆学唱川戏为生。不久,昭通成立了四川同乡会,也成立了专业戏班子,蒲松年开始正式在昭通的蜀香茶园登台唱戏。

踏入这一行之后,蒲松年越发察觉到自己非科班出身的劣势,他打听到当年拜过师的岳春的踪迹,于是整理行囊,返回四川寻找到了师父。此后蒲松年的表演技艺飞快提升,三年之间学得《活捉》《滚灯》《坠马》《扫秦》《下山》《醉隶》《献剑》《拾金》等高难度的“功夫戏”,在资阳河流派中占得嘉名。1911年,蒲松年被拉壮丁,他连夜逃往云南,在那里生活了13年。53岁时他才又折返四川,一直活跃在资中、内江、自贡等地的戏剧舞台上。

抗日战争时期,有一场为抗日将士捐献寒衣的“义演”。他所出演的剧目是《拾金》,其中有角色在雪堆中拾取一块金条的情节。演到这里,他忽然停下,将拾起的金条放入了募捐箱中,一时全场掌声雷动。观众们也被此举感染,纷纷慷慨解囊。

Pu Songnian was born into a peasant fam ily in Pengjiachang, Shuangliu County, Sichuan in 1871. Pu performed Nuo Opera and played w izard roles together w ith his elder brother since childhood. Later he studied under Yue Chun, a famed clown actor of Sichuan Opera. A fterwards, he went alone to Zhaotong, Yunnan where he acted in operas on the stage of Shuxiang Tea Garden.

Realizing his shortcom ings in performance, Pu returned to Sichuan and continued to study under Yue Chun. Over three years, he acquired and perfected skills in perform ing challenging kungfu operas including Capture Alive, Rolling Lamp, Falling off a Horse, Sweeping off Qin, Going Downhill, Drunken Slave, Presenting a Sword and Picking up Gold, earning his reputation in the Ziyang River School.

During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, at a charity show intended to raise w inter clothes for Chinese off icers and soldiers, Pu put the gold bars used in the play in the collection box. His action deeply moved the audience who donated generously.

In 1951, Pu Songnian, aged 80, went to Chongqing upon invitation to attend the f irst opera work conference of southwest China. He was elected as Executive Chairman. Pu Songnian led a lonely life for much of his lifetime. Even in the most difficult times, he did not give up theatrical performance. His performance, entertaining yet inspiring, has a strong artistic appeal, and his stage image enchanting.
