The change of name from Guangdu to Shuangliu
战国末期，秦灭巴蜀数国，将蜀国的疆域并入秦国，置蜀郡，广都属于蜀郡。汉武帝时期，广都正式设县。“蜀郡，州治，属县六……广都县，郡西三十里，元朔二年置。”（《华阳国志》）此后数百年广都县的隶属及名字没有大变。公元601年，隋炀帝杨广登基在即，为避杨广讳，广都县就不得不改名了。不知是哪位大家从左思《蜀都赋》中“带二江之双流，抗峨眉之重阻”一句找到灵感，自此，双流替代了广都。此二江指的是李冰开凿都江堰后，疏导郫江和流江穿成都西南而过，形成“两江珥其市，九桥带其流”的城市格局。唐代高骈改道郫江，两江并流变为两江环抱，自合江亭汇合成锦江一路南下，从永安镇毛家湾进入双流，河面渐宽，平均达150米。沿途江安河、鹿溪河、老南干等17条河渠汇入锦江，水势壮阔。双水合流、紫气东来，李冰造福后人泽被万世的功绩也深深地铭刻在双流这一地名之上。
但广都之名也并未就此消失。公元663年的唐朝，从双流县中划出一部分，复置广都县，广都和双流并存。直到近六百年后元朝忽必烈中统元年，才撤去广都县，其地大部分纳入华阳县，一部分纳入双流县。从广都到双流，恰似农耕文明向河流文明的发展历程，隐喻着这片土地更加宽广而无限的未来。

In the late Warring States period, Qin annexed several states including Ba and Shu. Therefore, the Shu territory was merged into Qin and renamed Shu Prefecture which governed Guangdu and other places. Guangdu became a county during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. The aff iliation and name of Guangdu County changed little during the subsequent centuries. In A.D. 601, a few years before the succession of Yang Guang, Emperor Yang of Sui, to the throne, to avoid the name of the future emperor, Guangdu was renamed Shuangliu（literally, two rivers）. This name was derived from a sentence in the Rhapsody on the Capital of Shu by Zuo Si, “The capital is run through by two rivers and located opposite to the towering peaks of Emei.”
In 663, the Tang court reestablished Guangdu County out of Shuangliu County. Since then, Guangdu and Shuangliu had coexisted. Until the f irst year of the Zhongtong period during the reign of Kublai Khan in the Yuan Dynasty（1260）, nearly 600 years later, Guangdu County was removed, w ith the bulk of it merged in Huayang County and a small part included in Shuangliu County. The change of name from Guangdu to Shuangliu, just like the evolution from farm ing civilization tof luvial civilization, was a metaphor for a broader, unlim ited future of this place.
